A free knitting pattern for ear warmers is simply a beginner-friendly knitted accessory that wraps around your head, keeps your ears warm, and skips the bulk of a full hat. And yes, I’ve got a gorgeous, woodland-inspired version for you.
This post walks you through how I knit my Cedar Headband using Berroco Vintage (affiliate link), why it’s one of my favorite winter accessories, and everything you need to know before casting on.

What makes this free knitting pattern for ear warmers so beginner-friendly?
This free knitting pattern for ear warmers is easy because it’s knit in the round, which means zero sewing—a huge win in my book.
I love headband projects that let me grab my needles, knit a simple tube, and bind off. No mattress stitch. No stress. Just enjoyable, rhythmic knitting.
Here’s what makes the Cedar Headband extra approachable:
- Knit entirely in the round
- Uses worsted weight Berroco Vintage (affiliate link) -one of my top workhorse yarns
- Evergreen tree texture is simple but eye-catching
- Three sizes included: child, small adult, and large adult
- Wide enough to actually keep your ears warm
- Fast weekend project

How does the evergreen stitch pattern work in this free knitting pattern for ear warmers?
The evergreen texture is created with simple knits and purls, so this free knitting pattern for ear warmers stays relaxing and rhythmic.
When you work it in the round, the tiny trees line up around the entire headband like a quiet little forest. It’s subtle but so charming.
You’ll love this stitch if you enjoy:
- Repetitive textures
- Patterns that look harder than they are
- Designs with a woodland vibe
- Projects with minimal counting
This headband feels like peaceful knitting—perfect for evenings with tea, an audiobook, or while catching up on your shows.

What size should I make for this free knitting pattern for ear warmers?
The Cedar Headband includes three sizes, and each one fits with a gentle stretch thanks to Berroco Vintage’s springy blend.
A free knitting pattern for ear warmers should always include good sizing options, and I designed this one with gifting in mind.
Here are the fit notes:
- Child — great for ages 4–10
- Small Adult — fits most teens and women
- Large Adult — a comfy option for larger head circumferences or extra layers
Since it’s knit in the round, the sizing is easy to adjust—just cast on more or fewer stitches in multiples of the stitch repeat.

Most knitters finish this free knitting pattern for ear warmers in an evening or two.
I knit my sample during a weekend movie marathon with my kids, and by Sunday evening it was blocked and ready for photos.
